The Quiet Family [
Tumblr media
Remember when Tim Burton used to make actually good movies?  There’s something about the alchemy of Kim Jee-woon’s romp which has a very Burtonesque edge to it.  The intermingling of the macabre with the darkly funny in a very specifically off-kilter way, the hyperbolic performances and reactions make this in a similar vein to the likes of Ed Wood or Beetlejuice.  The Kang clan simply cannot catch a break: at first their newly opened mountain lodge can barely attract visitors.  But once guests do start to show up, their checkout is of the rather final sort.  Deciding that it’s easier to just dispose of the evidence themselves than to involve authorities, the family unwittingly weave for themselves a wild web of intrigue and mayhem, lining up dominoes to be knocked over one by one.  By the climax, it’s not a question of whether things will go awry but just rather how exquisitely terribly events will pan out.
While Song Kang-ho often picks roles that are rough around the edges personality-wise, it’s funny to see him here as an outright delinquent.  Seemingly stuck in some sort of state of arrested development, Young-min is content to wile away his days spying on guests, prank calling people in the middle of sex, and generally making a buffoon of himself.

NAVILLERA // KDRAMA DİZİ YORUMU
UYARI : Yazılar genel olarak spoiler içerebilir. İçermeyedebilir.
İmdb puanı: 8,7 Benim puanım: 9
Drama: Navillera (English & Korean title)
Hangul:
Director: Han Dong-Hwa
Writer: Hun (webcomic), Ji-Min (webcomic), Lee Eun-Mi
Date: 2021
Language: Korean
Country: South Korea
Cast: Park In-Hwan, Song Kang, Na Moon-Hee, Jo Bok-Rae, Kim Tae-Hoon, Kim Kwon, Hong Seung-Hee
OST:
Taemin - My Day
Navillera has secured its place among my most memorable dramas, offering a heartwarming and inspiring story. At its core lies the journey of a 70-year-old man pursuing his lifelong dream in his twilight years and the extraordinary bond he forms with a young ballerina. The narrative delivers powerful messages – that dreams have no age limit, and that no one is alone in life's struggles.
The retired postman Shim Deok-chul (Park In-hwan), one of the drama's main characters, has yearned to learn ballet his entire life. Having spent decades conforming to family and societal expectations, his decision to chase this dream requires remarkable courage. Park In-hwan portrays the character's vitality and emotional depth with such authenticity that viewers intimately experience Deok-chul's hopes and regrets.
On the other hand, Lee Chae-rok (Song Kang), though young, carries the weariness of someone enduring life's hardest blows. Once a promising ballet dancer, Chae-rok finds himself trapped between dreams and reality due to his father's debts and mother's death. Song Kang delivers a career-defining performance, conveying both the physical and emotional burdens of his character. The dance scenes are particularly mesmerizing – not just visually stunning, but deeply expressive of the character's emotional journey.
The supporting characters enrich the story beautifully. While Deok-chul's family turns his ballet passion into a crisis, the people around Chae-rok contribute to his personal transformation. Each well-crafted side character adds warmth and realism to the drama.
Song Kang has visibly matured as an actor before our eyes. When I first saw him in Sweet Home, he seemed almost boyish. In Nevertheless, though his character was unlikable, his acting shone, and by Forecasting Love and Weather, he demonstrated remarkable maturity. While not chronological, Navillera undoubtedly features one of his most unforgettable performances. Park In-hwan's embodiment of Deok-chul felt so genuine that I'm surprised I hadn't noticed his talent before. Song Kang underwent rigorous ballet training for months to prepare for the role, which the director noted helped him deeply understand his character. Deok-chul's dance scenes were particularly impressive, blending physical preparation with powerful emotional expression.
The drama's appeal to both young and older viewers is one of its greatest strengths. Despite their age difference, Deok-chul and Chae-rok's relationship stands as one of the most heartwarming friendships. The use of ballet not as mere plot device but as emotional core made the story exceptionally rewarding.
In conclusion, Navillera is a warm, hopeful drama that reminds viewers of all ages that dreams should never surrender to time. It's one of those rare productions without a single flaw – an absolute must-watch for anyone who hasn't seen it yet.

When Life Gives You Tangerines
Tumblr media
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2025
When Life Gives You Tangerines (2025, South Korea)
Director: Kim Won Seok
Writer: Lim Sang Choon
Mini-review:
With a dream team like this one, expectations were understandably sky-high. And yet, the show has somehow managed to surpass them. Throughout the past four weeks, it has given us a soaring story about love, loss, growing up and life in general, all of it centered around the incredible women of one specific family. That allows for a deeply insightful exploration of gender roles in South Korea, which writer Lim Sang Choon handles with both sensitivity and bite. The entire cast gives it their all too; I'm not exaggerating when I say this is career-best work from IU, Park Bo Gum, Moon So Ri and Park Hae Joon, and the supporting performers are equally brilliant. Also, kudos must be given to the art teams for the beautiful sets, costumes, make-up, CGI and cinematography. And of course, director Kim Won Seok shepherded the whole project towards brilliancy. All in all, When Life Gives You Tangerines is an unforgettable drama that will stay with you for a long time.

Korean GLs I'd Watch...
Let's try to manifest a world where some of the biggest Korean actresses were cast in major full-length GL kdramas.
Tumblr media
COP + CRIMINAL
Esom (Because This Is My First Life) and Lee Da-hee (Search: WWW) play partners and besties, who both fall for their respective suspects for a crime spree against the patriarchy. (Think: Evening the pay gap at a major company; exposing scandals of sexist politicians; and chemically castrating sex offenders). Esom's love interest is Park Eun-bin (Extraordinary Attorney Woo), and Da-hee's love interest is Seo Yea-ji (It's Okay to Not Be Okay). It's a romantic crime thriller.
Tumblr media
FRIENDS to LOVERS
Seol In-ah (Business Proposal) plays a new-money rich girl who hires a former old-money rich girl, played by Yoo In-na (Touch Your Heart), to be her personal assistant out of pity, but pretends she doesn't know her backstory. And Yoo helps Seol navigate rich society. Their conflict is that Seol's family bankrupted Yoo's family, and is getting the life Yoo was supposed to have, including the fiancee, the job, and the house. It's a sweet romantic comedy.
Tumblr media
BOSS + EMPLOYEE
Kim Ji-won (Fight My Way) starts a job at a family law firm and works hard to get one of the partners, played by Son Ye-jin (Crash Landing on You), to be her mentor, but only because she wants her job. She starts off as a frenemie before Ye-Jin's hard edges rub off, and Ji-won develops a crush. Their obstacles are that Ye-Jin is married and in the closet, and Ji-won might be too ambitious to let go of her goals. It's a slow-burn romantic legal drama.
Tumblr media
COOL GIRL + DORK
Park Shin-hye (Heirs & Pinocchio) plays a cold fashion house designer who hires an unlikely candidate to be her muse, played by Moon Ga-young (True Beauty). And what starts off as a toxic relationship blooms into a supportive one. Park Bo-young (Strong Girl Bong-soon) plays her head of design, who befriends Ga-young's bestie-turned-manager, played by Kim Seul-gi (Oh My Ghostess). They're the softer side couple. It's a romantic workplace dramedy.
Tumblr media
FRIENDS to ENEMIES to LOVERS
Seo Hyun-jin (Why Her?) and Gong Hyo-jin (When the Camellia Blooms) were friends in college, but they had a falling out after a misunderstanding about a guy. They have a tense reunion as adults when Hyo-jin is setting up her nuptials at the wedding hall Hyun-jin manages. It's a slowburn romantic drama.
Tumblr media
ONE-SIDED OBSESSION
Shin Min-a (Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha) plays the wife of a very powerful and abusive man and Hwang Jung-eum (She Was Pretty) plays the maid who is secretly in love with her and helps her escape. They go to Jung-eum's hometown where everyone assumes she's bringing her girlfriend home for the first time, because she didn't have the heart to tell them she got dumped after running away to be with her. Min-a decides to pretend to be the woman to pay her back, and they fall in love. The conflict being when Jung-eum's ex, played by Park Min-young (What's Wrong with Secretary Kim), returns to get her back.
